Coecles Harbor Cruising Guide

At OspreysGuide.com we try to be as unbiased as possible. But when we talk about Coecles Harbor it will be obvious, this is our favorite harbor. We have been keeping our boats in Coecles Harbor for almost 30 years. We have traveled up and down the New England coast and to us, this harbor is still our favorite.  This is our home.

CLICK TO ENLARGECoecles Harbor is located on the eastern section of Shelter Island. While the northern shoreline is scattered with many beautiful homes, the southern shore line is completely undeveloped and part of Mashomack Nature Preserve. Coecles Harbor is one of the most protected harbors on the east end.

While the beauty of the harbor is overwhelming, maneuvering the harbor can be tricky for boats with deep drafts. Our navigation sections will point out what you need to know in order to avoid any trouble. Remember, the buoys outside and inside the harbor are privately maintained and their locations often shift from year to year. The navigation section will also give you exact waypoints and tell you which buoys are misplaced this year.

Here are some local regulations you will need to know while in Coecles Harbor:

  • Pumping out in the harbor is illegal and punishable by law. Please check with the marine services in Coecles Harbor to find out where to get pumped out. Help keep our harbor clean.

  • Shell fishing is illegal without a permit. For information on obtaining a permit from the Town of Shelter Island CLICK HERE.

  • Anchoring is limited to the south-east section of the harbor. See our Anchorage Section for more information.

  • While there is a 25 mph speed limit in the harbor, there is a no wake restriction inside the harbor. Please be aware of your wake, especially while entering or exiting the narrow entrance to the harbor.

  • No personal Watercraft operation in Town Waters.

  • These harbor regulations are also posted at the entrance. CoeclesHrbrEntranceSign.jpg (37841 bytes)
