The eastern end of long island is often described
as a "fish tail". Orient is located
on the northern most "Tail". Unlike
Montauk located on the "southern tail", Orient is
a quiet area that is far less populated. This
area is often overlooked by boaters who prefer
to visit
Shelter Island, Sag
Harbor, East Hampton or
Montauk.
This area is among the most quiet
and tranquil on the east end. Orient over
looks the waters of Long Island Sound and Gardiner's
Island. Orient's shores also have spectacular views of the Orient
Lighthouse, Plum Island and "Plum Gut".
This Cruising Guide is separated into three areas
of concentration; Orient
Point, Orient
Harbor and Hallock
Bay. Orient
Harbor and Hallock
Bay are secluded and well protected bodies of
water, while Orient
Point offers a busy inlet. Orient
Harbor and Hallock
Bay are protected from Gardiners bay by a long strip
of beach called Long Beach Preserve. The
preserve is the home to numerous forms of wildlife
including several ospreys.
